The UK is incredibly lucky to have some of the most creative talent in the world. I just came back from the annual nursery show in Harrogate and I am always staggered by how many “why didn’t I think of that” ideas that appear on the market each year. People say to me about Little Champ “why didn’t I think of that?” or “I can’t believe that no one is already doing it”.
Inventor Tom is a role model in “why didn’t I think of it” ideas and he has proven pretty good at bringing his products to market too. Of course, Tom made the really bold step of going onto the Apprentice to bring his products to market, which is perhaps a step too far for most people, including me.
However, Tom is part of a movement of entrepreneurs who are bringing new products to market all the time. Tom knows as well as anyone that with so much creative competition, it is very difficult to be spotted. Everybody needs their break and that is why he invented Invent with Tom.
Invent with Tom gave me the opportunity to showcase my sports themed toys brand called Little Champ in all the JoJo Maman Bébé shops across the UK and Ireland over Christmas 2014. We could not have asked for a better time or a better store to work with JoJo Maman Bébé.
Fortunately, Invent with Tom, was a major success for us. Our toys sold really well and we won the most votes in the poll. Whenever I visited a JoJo Maman Bébé store to see the toys on the shelf, the feedback was consistent – “we love it, when are you developing new products, new sports?” I still go to JoJo stores, just to see the toys on the shelf.
Launching a new product is a daunting prospect for an entrepreneur. I wrote to all the buyers in all the major retailers asking them to stock Little Champ. I even wrote to many small stores. I cursed them when I did not get so much as a reply. I went to expensive trade shows and waited for buyers from the major stores to come along but so many buyers just walked past, looking at their feet instead of looking up at my stand and seeing my amazing products. I was starting to doubt myself and then I found out about “Invent with Tom”. I entered and it was my turning point. I have not looked back since.
If you have a product already and you want to bring it to market, launching in JoJo Maman Bébé through “Invent with Tom” is a great way to start. I like Invent with Tom because ultimately the customers will decide – they either buy your products or they vote for you. If you don’t win, you have lost nothing – but you may need to re-evaluate your brand. I strongly encourage you to apply!
